The Veranda Special Care Unit
For Persons with Alzheimer's and Dementia
The Veranda is the area’s only
Special Care Unit (SCU), as designated by the Illinois Department of Public
Health. The Veranda’s SCU
designation means that it meets specific standards, beyond the required
regulations of a nursing home. The
specific standards we meet follow along the lines of the Key Elements of Care
as outlined by the Alzheimer’s Association. These Key Elements include:
- Dementia Care Focus our programs, environment and approaches to care are unique and
specific to each person and family as care needs
- Dementia Trained Staff our staff are have specialized training which qualifies them to
understand the unique nature of this disease and better work with both
residents and families
- Care Planning a process which involves on-going assessment of the each resident’s
potential in order to maximize independence
- Individualized Care recognizes the unique capabilities, health, behavior and personal preferences of the
individual
- Programming is focused on activities rather than medical care with an emphasis
placed on identifying activities which maximize a persons strengths and abilities
- Environment The Veranda is a self-contained dedicated unit, which encourages
independence while also promoting safety.
